In celebration of World Book Day on 23 April, Serviceplan Suisse organised a literary speed dating event at the Papiersaal in Zurich on behalf of the Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association (SBVV). In line with the campaign motto, «Say it with a book», participants brought their favourite book with them as a way of introducing themselves.
The goal of the «Say it with a book» campaign, which launched last November, is to make books popular again and to inspire more people to shop at bookstores. The literary speed dating event allowed participants to experience the underlying idea that books not only communicate through their content, but also through their title and cover – and that books can also say a lot about the people reading them.
The speed dating event
A total of 60 singles were asked to bring their favourite book with them. Female participants chose their male dating partners based on the books they brought, which would go on to serve as welcome topics of conversation and icebreakers as the night went on. Not only did the successful event offer people the chance to meet a potential partner, but also to expand their own literary horizons. A refreshingly analogue alternative to online dating, the event was able to bring literature fans together in a romantic atmosphere.
Three humorous video clips show how fruitful the «Say it with a book» campaign platform can be by carrying out a dialogue using only book titles. As an ad for the event mentioned above, one of the video clips tells the story of two people who meet at the speed dating event and enter into a conversation. The second ad tells the story of someone coming out, while the third takes an ironic look at current events around the globe. Additional print media on topical subjects are also in the pipeline.
